Note from Sundara...I love how sparkling and fresh this photo of, this is always how I think of the sea when I picture it in my mind. It seemed appropriate for Memorial Day weekend and how it officially kicks off beach season.

The color of this is a bit more deconstructed than the photo. The sea blues have an undertone of indigo, even though they are light and running throughout is that mysterious sea green color of the water. This photo didn't pick it up, but it plays off the blues and grays, giving it a warmth and current of interest than your typical blue-grey yarn. I don't normally wear blues and greys, but there is something about this color that is tempting me. I think that rivulet of sea green makes it more wearable, somehow.

Note from Sundara...one of you lovely knitters requested a "manly sort of color" out of this new yarn base so she could knit her husband a pair of socks. She's using two skeins, one per sock. In case you also have the gumption to knit the man in your life a pair of socks. Or possibly a hat, fingerless mitts, maybe a cowl. Or maybe you just love forest green for yourself. Then definitely indulge.

This has a range of mysterious forest greens, along with hints of grey and charcoal. And it is soft, with a bit of toughness from the nylon. Hopefully perfect for my lovely knitter and her husband!

Note from Sundara...so I cheated on this yarn. I had a perfectly lovely inspiration photo of sangria picked out and I dyed the yarn the delicious ruby-garnet-wine-purple with undertones of spice. Really, it's some gorgeous yarn.

But then I saw this photo of sangria and it's got figs! It's my favorite fruit and my favorite beverage in one! So I cheated and swapped photos. Please forgive me for the transgression and that hues in the yarn are a little bit different from the delicious wines of the photo.

Since I did recently dye a bright and saturated Daffodil yellow and also a lighter, mellow yellow, I went with a more medium value, medium bright yellow. This isn't HELLO yellow, but it's not soft buttercream yellow either. Somewhere between the two. Perfect for spring or summer.

Note from Sundara...a customer asked me to repeat this Daily Dream color, and I was happy to oblige. Here is what I said the first time I dyed this:

This inspiration photo has perplexed me for quite some time. It's such a lovely array of subtle colors that dyeing yarn in these gorgeous shades is a no brainer, but the problem lies in that the tones are essentially a darker color subdued by the overlay of frost, which I can't do in yarn dyeing. I'm not able to layer a light color over a dark color and effectively "cover up" the dark layer as the frost does. It's physically impossible. I could change the shade of the dark color with a lighter layer of color over it, but not lighten it, especially with the frosty translucence.

So what is a yarn dyer to do? I finally decided to just go with my instincts for the overall feel of these colors and see what happens. And actually, I'm very pleased with the result. This yarn base picks up the darker shades in the deeper twists of the yarn while the lighter frosty greys and pinks and periwinkles end up on the fluffier outside bits of the twists. It's lovely and represents these luscious, frosted blackberries to the best of my dyeing abilities. Hopefully you'll agree!

Note from Sundara...I'm always excited about the Daily Dreams when the yarn turns out even better than the inspiration photo and this is one of those colors.

The yarn photo doesn't totally show the richness and variation of blues that are going on in each skein. It's a vibrant, without being garish, combination of cobalt, indigos with lowlights of bright navies and highlights of periwinkles and sky blue. I don't wear a lot of blue, but I sort of want to make an exception and knit myself a scarf out of this one, it's just that pretty.

Note from Sundara...I thought I'd try something different for today's inspiration and use one of my favorite paintings of all time: Georgia O'Keefe's Oriental Poppies.

Note from Sundara...If you spend any time studying art history, you'll know that most artists return to the same subject matter over and over again. Like Monet and his haystacks. I'm the last person to call my yarn dyeing art, but I often feel the tug of returning to an inspiration photo to re-interpret the color again. So today we return to this lovely photo with Through the Center II.

It's on fingering silky merino this time (first time was DK merino) and it's lighter, albeit still moody, with more turquoises and purples coming together to form the blues and the darker shades. It's exquisite and it makes me glad I decided to give in to the siren song of this photo.

Hello, Sunshine Italian fingering merino cashmere

Note from Sundara...This is my second time dyeing my new Italian fingering merino cashmere yarn base and I have to tell you one of the best things about this yarn is that the cashmere the mill uses is "white cashmere", which means I can dye this yarn in light colors. My old fingering merino cashmere used some sort of non-pure-white cashmere, so the base color of the yarn was a bit grey. Not enough to bother medium or darker colors, but enough that I could never dye truly light colors without them looking dirty.

So of course, I am taking full advantage of this and dyed a beautiful light and airy lemony buttercream yellow. It's delicious and full of spring and sunshine. And all of you fingering merino cashmere lovers will finally have a chance to knit a lighter colored product. Yay for all of us!

Note from Sundara...I have lots to tell you about today's yarn.

First, the color. The west coast has had an extremely wet April and I've spent a lot of time looking at cherry blossoms against grey skies. While this isn't quite what I was hoping for this spring, the color combination proved to be gorgeous and is the inspiration for today's color. This photo obviously isn't of a spring storm with the grey skies and cherry blossoms, but it was the closest I could find.

Second, the yarn! I haven't had a fingering merino cashmere nylon blend in probably two years because I got fed up with the mill I got the yarn from. I also always sort of had an issue with that yarn because I felt, like I mentioned yesterday, that the nylon gave it a slight plastic feel that I didn't like. But I'm pretty picky about these things, so I offered it because so many of you loved it.

Enter my new yarn supplier. They mill most of their yarn in Italy and they have a fingering merino cashmere nylon blend yarn that doesn't feel plastic-y AND feels softer and more luxurious than the old fingering merino cashmere even though it has less cashmere.

But, the skeins are only 100 grams and 383 yards, which means you'll probably need more than 1 skein for a smaller project. I know a lot of you loved the bigger 150 gram/500 yard skeins of fingering merino cashmere, so I realize that isn't ideal.

Still, I figure some sort of fingering merino cashmere is better than no fingering merino cashmere, so we'll name this "Italian fingering merino cashmere" to differentiate it from the old fingering merino cashmere and you'll have to let me know what you think.

Just a few batches available and yarn will ship late next week. I'm really behind on mailing yarn.

FINGERING MERINO CASHMERE 10 is 383 yards and 100 grams of 80% super wash merino, 10% cashmere, and 10% nylon. It knits up at 7-9 stitches per inch on US 0-2/2-2.75mm needles. Spun in Italy from merino sheep that were not subject to mulesing. Gently hand was in tepid water for project longevity. Orders for 2 or more skeins will be matched as closely as possible.

Note from Sundara...yarn photography can be exasperating sometimes. This color is so pretty I want to eat it, but the photo does not do it any sort of justice. Picture sky blue and ocean teal all commingled together into a big wave. It's gorgeous summer fun.

But even more exciting is this new yarn base. Over the years, I've had many requests for a sock yarn with nylon, but I haven't found one that doesn't have a slight "plastic-y" feel. And so I couldn't bring myself to offer one to you.

But this! This is like a dream. It's the exact same yarn, in terms of fiber quality, softness, bounciness, and spin, as the new extra fine fingering merino, but it has just enough nylon to give it that heft for feet or anything that will take a beating.

BUT you can't even feel the nylon. If you didn't know any better, you'd think it was a 100% merino yarn. So sock knitters rejoice!

Or if you need a yarn for a project that will get washed a lot or worn roughly, like a child's sweater or for someone who works outside, this is your yarn.

Note from Sundara...I had a long drive yesterday and the Rolling Stones' song "Paint it, Black" came on and I thought "hey! I just dyed yarn that totally fits the description of "I see your red door and I want it painted black" and while this yarn's color is not nearly as bleak as the song, I still liked the synchronicity.

I started out with lush reds and purples of the flowers and overlaid them with the dark of night to create this lovely, nuanced color. It reminds me of late summer evenings, when the scent of flowers fill the air and the darkness descends, muting the summer colors into mystery. A more positive version of painting it black.

I only dyed a few batches and won't be dyeing this color again, so color is limited. I'm behind on everything - yarn will ship next week.

Note from Sundara...I've got cherry trees blooming and that new spring green everywhere I look, and as much as I've looked forward to spring, I still wanted to say a wistful farewell to winter. And you can't go wrong with this squishy DK merino.

This blend is all light aquas and icy greys, with touches of deeper sky blue and the highlights of snow. It's a winter wonderland of color for those of you who love these hues as much as I do.

Note from Sundara...Firstly, this name might be striking you as a bit odd, but I just like the way seditious sounds. I can't imagine either this yarn or plant inciting any sort of sedition!

Secondly, I photographed this particular skein of yarn to show you the full variety of color in this yarn, but almost all the skeins, including this one, are primarily the darker aubergine-purple-wine color. Please don't expect something this variegated! They will, of course, have hints of all these colors, some skeins more than others. But buy this yarn if you like that gorgeous dark color and assume whatever multi bits you get are just a bonus. They are all supremely elegant and will knit up gorgeously.

Note from Sundara...I was going through old Daily Dream inspiration photos and decided to use this one again, as this particular navy-purple color is hard to find in photos, but particularly beautiful.

The yarn is a primarily "solid" color, although solid is pretty relative in hand dyed yarn. It will give lace or any complicated stitch pattern depth and subtle variety, without distracting. The color ranges between navy and dark indigo-purple, with lots of sheen and delicate variation.

Note from Sundara...I asked my daughter and nephews what color I should dye this yarn and, in unison, they shouted "PURPLE". My brother-in-law, who was weeding with my mother, pointed out some violets and inspiration was found.

I layered about 18** different shades of purple to get a super saturated color with amazing variety within the shade of "purple". It's got purple, violet, red-violet, orchid, iris, lilac, grape, probably all the various shades of lavender. It's a dream of purple.

    Dashing Daffodil

    $50.00

Just 1 Dk silky cashmere left and a few silky yak!

Note from Sundara...I dearly love daffodils. I love everything about them. I love that they are a sign that spring is truly here and I've survived another winter. I love the way they smell, even if it is a bit odd compared to other flowers. And the color!   I could go on and on.

These skeins are not a timid yellow. They are bold and bright and most certainly a statement. It's a warm yellow with lighter bits and warmer bits and brighter bits and softer bits. It's the perfect antidote for anyone ready to take a break from icy, cool greys and darks of winter. And if you might want a little yellow in your life, but are a little scared of THIS MUCH yellow, knit something with lace. The openness of the stitches will diffuse the color and take the edge off the boldness.

Assuming that you'd want this for smaller projects, I dyed "Dashing Daffodil" in lace silky merino, fingering silky yak, petite fingering silky, and DK silky cashmere to meet a variety of fiber and gauge needs. Just one batch of each yarn base and will ship earlier next week.

Note from Sundara...This photo had the requisite amount of fluffy softness to inspire this phenomenally fluffy yarn. Although I'm actually glad the yarn turned out more muted than the photo. I think it's more sophisticated.

Just as a warning, these skeins have a lot of variability. I photographed one that represented the group as best as any one skein could, but keep in mind the skein(s) you receive may have more of the grey or more of the purple-pink. I'll obviously match however many skeins you order as best as I can.
