Note from Sundara...Okay. So this was not what today's color was supposed to look like. AT ALL. I had another inspiration photo picked out and I was ready to dye. And I dyed the yarn the first round (I often put my yarn through two dips in the dye pot, taking it out and spinning it nearly dry between dips). After the first dip, the color (that was supposed to be a green), looked the color on the right, that aqua overlayed with bronze. And let me tell you. It is gorgeous. Maybe the second most prettiest color I've ever dyed on silk (after the Champagne Kisses gold color). Maybe even prettier than Champagne Kisses. I could not bring myself to dye over it. It's STUNNING.

So I cheated. I threw out the inspiration photo and went and found a photo kind of close to that color. It's the closest I could find and I know it doesn't even have the other color in it. I contemplated just sending out yarn without a pretty inspiration photo, but I know how you all love your daily dose of pretty. And the other color? It was also supposed to be something completely different. I dyed that deep, dark, rich, and saturated magenta-wine-burgundy color to go specifically with the aqua-bronze color. And they really do look divine together. It's not an expected color combination, but it works. They'd make a stunning, well, pretty much whatever you want. You can't go wrong with yarn this pretty.

"The Indulgence of Beauty" will not be dyed again. Updated: 2 skeins of the magenta left.

Note from Sundara...Our kitchen window looks out on our neighbors 60-acre field. Right now, it's filled with wildflowers, which, fine, are dandelions, but I can live in a fantasy world and pretend it is actually something like this photo. Which is why I I like the dreamy quality of it. Wouldn't it be lovely to live next door to something like this?

Instead, we'll have yarn. #1 is maybe the most perfect lilac-color I've ever dyed. I've dyed lots of lilac and I don't think I've ever come as close to an actual lilac flower as this. If you love lilacs, maybe splurge. #2, the green, I took some artistic license with. I wanted a darker, forest-y green rather than grass green, so that is what I dyed. It will make a gorgeous lace something. And #3 the orange-y yellow. Sigh. I could wax rhapsodic about this for days. It's cheery and sunshine and one of the best orange-y yellows I've dyed in a while. And I love pretty much anything yellow and anything orange, so that is saying something. The only real problem with this trio of colors is that there is only a half a batch of each, which isn't much.

"Spring Wildflowers" will not be dyed again. Updated: 2 skeins left of #1 & #2, 1 skein left of #3.

Note from Sundara...I may have mentioned that my parents were just took a Hawaiian vacation, which, you know, Hawaii is good inspiration. I saw this photo and thought...drama! And you know what drama makes for? People-stopper projects. The projects where, when you where them, people stop you and tell you how amazing it is and what a fantastic knitter you are. And don't we all love that? That's the best. Makes you feel like a million bucks and makes all those hours and hours of knitting worth it.

Personally, I love me some pink and orange, so I would use all three of these colors together, but even just the dark purple with either the orange or the pink would be sufficient people-stopper dramatic. Or, you could do just the orange and the pink because bright! is also people-stopper dramatic. You pretty much can't go wrong with any combination of these three. Go with whatever calls to you. It'll be the right people-stopper for you.

"Hawaiian Sunset" will not be dyed again. Updated: 1 skein left of the orange & a few skeins left of the dark purple.

Note from Sundara...How was I supposed to resist this photo? I only recently found out that there was a Japanese version of flowering plums that were different from the flowering plums that I know and love. Aren't they pretty?

And while the blossom pink of the fingering merino silky cashmere is super pretty and super soft (softest yarn I have!), the mohair is really the color that I'm proud of here. The photos don't do it any justice. It's a stunning mix of a sort of forest-teal green with a dark navy that goes almost violet in the sun. And, of course, underneath all that fluffy mohair, those colors have the sparkle of the silk core. If you can find a way to combine these two yarns so these colors can coordinate with these colors, it would really be something.

"Ume Blossoms" will not be dyed again. Updated: 2 mohair left.

Note from Sundara...I have two goals with today's yarn. The first is to live vicariously through the color because I yearn for this rose bush, but I am not allowed any more rose plants (sigh). The second is to convince you that sport weight yarn is not the devil.

Seriously. Y'all seem to hate to knit anything with sport gauge. Periodically, one of you asks for it. I dye it, and it inevitably ends up being the least popular yarn weight of all time. Which makes no sense, because sport weight has so much to offer. It's faster to knit up than fingering, but still lightweight. It's a year-round gauge. Anything you make with it can be worn layered (still lightweight!) but is delicate enough that you can use it in the summer, when the nights get chilly.

So. Now that I've made the case for why you should make yourself something out of this glorious red sport weight yarn, what should you make? Have you seen the "Pasadena Pullover" by Mari Tobita? It's beyond gorgeous. You should knit it just to knit it it's such a lovely design. But, if you want something that will work for the upcoming warmer months, "Joni" by Nastasja Hornby is perfect for summer. And, if you don't want a sweater, there are tons of sport weight accessories patterns. I like the "Making Waves Cowl" by Kay Hopkins. And of course, for my crocheting friends, there is the "Honeybunch Tee" by Anne ten Haaf and the "Astrid shawl" by Tatsiana.

So many options! Such pretty yarn! Go forth and embrace the sport!

Note from Sundara...My mother, who is very proper in all things, suggested that she needed a sweater to go with the white pants she'd gotten to wear on Memorial Day. She and my daughter thought it would be best if a)the yarn was dyed by me, b)the sweater was knit by me, c)it was lightweight (for summer!) and (this was the important bit) d)the color was a bright blue with a hint of violet. Now, bright blue with a hint of violet sweaters look smashing with white pants and Memorial Day is quickly approaching, so who was I to deny my mother and my daughter?

I am knitting my mother's sweater on my knitting machine, so I'm going to use the "Suri Shirt" pattern by Caidree, because it is flattering and should be easy to convert. Other great summer sweater options are "Niveole" by Hel et Zei. Not only is that one free, the yardage is low. Double bonus. I've actually always wanted to knit myself the "Umbria Summer Top" by Cookie the Knitter. It's super stylish. Or, if none of those work for you, "Tegna" by Caitlin Hunter, has been knit at least 6700 times and that many knitters can't be wrong.

"Glories of the Morning" will not be dyed again. Updated: 2 batches left.

      The Vampire's Hydrangea
fingering polwarth
2 skeins left!

Note from Sundara...I have decided, at the reasonable age of 50, to attempt get over my also very reasonable fear of vampires. I have decided to go about doing that by dyeing yarn inspired by various vampire thingies. Today we have hydrangeas that have been drained of their life force by vampires. Because I have an overactive imagination and we are ignoring the fact that vampires are not real.

I will be knitting myself the "Petal Drop" socks by Florence Miller because they are pretty and they will keep vampires from nipping at my toes (Attempting to get over the fear––not over it!) I think Polwarth is the perfect yarn because it is sturdier than merino––better to ward off fanged teeth––and also it will hold up better as socks than merino. I've also been told that Polwarth is great for weaving, for my weaving friends out there. So if you also need to keep fanged teeth off your toesies, a skein will do you for a pair of these socks. (And the color will not show the dirt if you are too busy knitting to bother to sweep or vacuum as regularly as maybe you should.)

"The Vampire's Hydrangea" will not be dyed again

      Red Hot Poker
just a few skeins left!

Note from Sundara...I very nearly didn't name this Red Hot Poker because none of this yarn is red, but it is the name of this flower and it is a great name. Isn't it? Great name. Great flower. And even better yarn.

You all are probably excited about the yak because you all can't get enough of the yarn, but I'm excited about #2, the yellow lace silky alpaca. Most of you are probably thinking "Good Lord, that is some yellow yarn." And maybe not in a good way. But it is yellow in a good way. The thing with the lace silky alpaca is that when you knit it up, the color diffuses almost exponentially. So if you want even a basically bright color out of it, you need the color to look almost garish in the skein. So when this knits up, it will be the most gorgeous yellow with hints of saffron and marigold. It's a yellow-lovers dream.

#3, the fingering silky yak, is also a yellow-lovers dream, but also a coral-lovers dream. This is all fiery sunset colors and I'm loathe to let you all have these skeins because it's so pretty and these are the colors I like to wear. But I will. I will let you have the entire batch because yarn dyers can't hoard all the yarn.

#1, the blue lace silky alpaca is a deep, rich, super saturated blue, that, like #2, will hold its color when knit up. Or at least most of it. It's going to diffuse because all lace yarn diffuses some of its color, but it will still be a very elegant deep blue.

"Red Hot Poker" will not be dyed again. Updated: 1 skein of the blue alpaca and 3 skeins of the yak left.

      All Aflush
extra fine aran merino
1 skein left!

Note from Sundara...Well, who could resist these irises? This was so much fun to dye and will probably be even more fun to knit. I figured you could get a single skein, or, for those of you who hate knitting fingering but want to knit a sweater in a sort of fade/gradient, this could work.

#1 (left, the blue-leaning one) started with those tiny little stripes of blue in the center of the petals. It went from there. It's got that creamy-yellow of the petals, along with hints of the purple.

#3 (right, the purplish one) is probably the most "inspired" by the actual flower. It's super pretty, with that creamy yellow covered in the purple. Which, honestly, calling it purple is a disservice. It's so much more. I want to say this is my favorite of the bunch, but that's like saying you have a favorite child. I really shouldn't choose.

"All Aflush" will not be dyed again. Updated: 1 skein left of #1 and #3.

      Arc de Triomphe
just a few skeins left!

Note from Sundara...I've been wanting to use this photo for ages. It's the Arc de Triomphe, for starters. But I love how it gives such a sense of how it must feel at that specific moment in time. And the colors. I just love these colors.

#1 fingering silky merino singles (right) may not look like much, but I actually used bright orange and bright purple to get what is a hazy, spicy, coppery, rosy triumph of a color. If it were me, I'd pair it with #2 fingering silky merino singles (middle) and knit myself Stephen West's "Flying Foxtail Wrap." (2 skeins each color) Because, while the obvious choice for that project is two super contrasting colors, the projects I like best are those with two colors that have a medium contrast from the same color family. Like these two.

#3 Italian fingering merino cashmere (left) is for those who want a little bit of all the color but want it in one skein. It doesn't go all the way to the spicy, coppery burnt orange of #1, but it's got rich, deep shades of ruby red that wash over that deep blue-purple. It's pretty amazing.

"Arc de Triomphe" will not be dyed again. Updated: 3 skeins left of #2 and #3.

Note from Sundara...I have two more batches of the baby silky yak, and I wanted to do one of them (today's) in a dark wine red because that is always popular. So I went with this photo because it's another I wouldn't have normally picked because mixing orange and magenta aren't popular, but breaking it down into three different colors loosely inspired by the photo? All sorts of fun things.

The baby silky yak (#1 and far left in the trio) is the most straightforward. Like I said, it is a dark wine red and glorious in silk and yak. Yak being even softer than cashmere. The fingering merino cashmere (#3 and far right in the trio) is all sorts of dark browns with glints of orange and some reds in it from the inspired dawn. It literally feels like a rich velvet. But the fingering merino singles (#2 and the middle of the trio) is the one I find the most interesting. It's a combo of dark cherry reds and a deep, muted fuchsia - pretty much the color of the sky in the photo above the orange. It's not a color combination you see often, but it works well in this color. It should knit up oh so pretty; the two colors blending together to make something so much more than each as an individual. I hope some of you will try it out.

"The Velvet Light of Dawn" will not be dyed again. Just a few skeins of #2 left.
